Marc Malitz
Marc’s evolution as a Bass player began with Classic and Progressive Rock of the 70′s that soon merged with Instrumental Rock from the 80′s and 90′s from the likes of virtuosos, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. Both notorius guitar slingers were also known for sharing the same bassist, Stuart Hamm, who greatly inspired Marc to explore new heights with his playing. After discovering Jazz, which ultimately resulted in a Bachelors Degree in Jazz Studies from Roosevelt University, Marc found himself coming back to the instrument’s roots. By that I mean, focusing on the Groove.
It was at this point, where Marc’s true style began to take flight. By fusing all of his greatest influences on bass, he saw himself really carving out his own style and sensibility. Players like Steve Harris(Iron Maiden), Stuart Hamm, Chris Squire(Yes), Stanley Clarke, Les Claypool(Primus), Tony Levin(King Crimson, Peter Gabriel), Mike Rutherford(Genesis), Geddy Lee(Rush) went head to head with greats such as, James Jamerson(Motown session king), Donald “Duck” Dunn(Stax records), Paul McCartney, John Entwhistle(The Who), Lee Sklar(Phil Collins), and Pino Palladino(Pete Townsend, The Who). These prime influences then converged only to explode into Marc’s playing and showmanship on the stage, where his deep understanding of the bass was in full effect. Technique, tone, groove, soul, and passion were all at work simultaneously that created something special and unique.
By the late 90′s, Marc hooked up with Chicago virtuoso guitar legend, Hawk, and became a member of his Progressive Metal outfit, Imperial Rage. It was then that Marc met a keyboard player, who went by the name of, Shreddy, already a member of the band. After a fun stint with Imperial Rage, Marc decided to see what the City of Angels had to offer and relocated to Los Angeles in 2001. Marc’s tenure in LA featured numerous studio sessions and showcase gigs with more commercial and modern rock bands. One of these bands, The Heart Attack, even took him out to Australia for a 2 month tour up and down the Eastern Seaboard. It was blood and guts Rock and Roll and a truly memorable experience. Alas, the LA experience ended with Marc fashioning himself in a mop top wig and bopping his head to all the great 60′s British Invasion classics in a show band called, The British Beat. A different kind of experience to be sure, but all together a smashing good time! After enough heartbreaks, Marc decided it was time to head back home to Chicago. He immediately got back in touch with Shreddy, his old bandmate, and has now found himself a new home in Mindwarp Chamber. Timing is everything!
